BREAKIN' ARTISTS SPOTLIGHT: D-RAY

TexasMixtapes.Com Interview
TM's Own jMoney, Had A Chance To Catch Up With
Up And Coming Artist D-Ray, Out Of H-Town, TX.
Reigning From The Mr. Rogers And Sh*t Factory Camp.
TM's own J Money, had a chance to catch up with up and coming artist D-Ray, out of Htown, TX. Reigning from the Mr. Rodgers and Sh*t Factory camp.

TM: What's Good D-Ray? 2007 was just the beginning, how is 2008 looking for you so far?
D-Ray: Errthang gravy mayne. I'm just blessed to be outhere maintain' and able to grind another day. Gas damn near 4 dollars so I'm happy to still have some money in my pocket.

TM: You Reside In H-Town But Originally From Ft Worth Texas..How Does It Feel Being The One To Set The Standard In Your City?

D-Ray: It feels good! I always felt that I would be the one to do that for my city. A lot of niggas in The Funk(Fort Worth)t is followers when it come to the music shit. It's time to give the world a new style from a city that is constantly over looked. We got own own swagger, let these other niggas try to catch up wit us. Fuck tryna catch up with them. Funkytown STAND UP!! Twisted Black was about put us on the map but unfortunatley his situation caught up wit him. Much love to Houston for showin me love since I been out here though.

TM: What person and/or event brought you in the game as an artist?
D-Ray: I been rappin since I was in the 2nd grade. I started making my first mixtapes my DJ Mr. Rogers and the Shit Factory while I was enrolled at Prairie View A&M University in 2000.

TM: What artists/style of music influenced you the most growing up & what artists have influence on you now?
D-Ray: Man I grew up on a lot different music being around my Daddy. He listened to errythang, Cameo, Prince, The Isleys, Ohio Players, Maze and Frankie Beverly. That's why I'm cold at picking out samples. As far as this rap shit, PIMP C!!! Hands down UGK 4 Life! Project Pat and that old Triple 6 Mafia shit, Cam'ron, Gucci Mane and Prodigy from Mobb Deep. Back in the day I was on Too $hort real tough and Snoop, Wu-Tang, MC Ehit, Spice 1 and Pac. I was a Bone Thugs Head too. I love this music shit, I could go all day naming niggas if you let me!

TM: You Just Released Your First Solo Mixtape, What's the Response you've gotten so far?
D-Ray: Mannn, I'ts been good! The Lord blessed me with a talent that errybody seems to like so that's wassup.
It's time to get that show money now!!! Boys done hooked me up with clothes and all types of shit. Shout out to DJ Burn and Algierz Clothing Line.

TM: You Decided To Title It "My Mixtape Is Killing Your Mixtape", What Made You Decide This Was The Perfect Title?
D-Ray: Now before I answer this, Imma let you know that I'm a real modest person but these niggas nowadays SUCK!! Str8 up. I'm a fan of rap music before anythang so I still like to listen to niggas that's hot but Gotdamn...can somebody come wit some heat? I really feel like I'm crushin the majorty of these boys outhere rappin so Imma bring the heat. When I say I'm crushin niggas I mean with songs/hits. Don't come at me with that battle rappin shit cause I don't do that. My producers is killing these niggas too! Shout out to Stunt and Dozier and the whole DSF Entertainment. Niggas albums is garbage! I swear, it be hard to find shit to listen to.

TM:
Any big plans for D-Ray anytime soon?
D-Ray: Man I'm just day by day. By me finally having a solo mixtape, it's gonna open doors for me that I never knew existed. Imma keep hitting niggas over the head with this heat.
I got a mixtape with J-Money coming soon called "Shittin On Boyz". Imma just keep grindin mayne 'till the wheels fall off.

TM:
What is your favorite song you have ever released?
D-Ray: Probably "Luv Me (R.I.P. Pimp C)" The response from that one is crazy!!

TM:
What are your plans for the future?
D-Ray: Get Rich or Die Tryin!

TM: Any words of wisdom for upcoming artists looking to leave a mark in the game like you have?
D-Ray: Do as much of this shit on your own as you can so niggas don't feel like they got some type of control over your career and do what you feel.
Don't listen to people because they just be talkin and they ain't God so the don't know what the fuck they talking about. DO YOU!

TM:
Preciate taking the time out of your day to answer a couple questions for texasmixtapes.com. Any last words for the fans? and what is the #1 site for Texas HipHop?
D-Ray: My mixatpe is killing your mixtape whoever you are. If you wanna get at me for a show holla at Art at xplicitsounds@gmail.comThis e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it at 682-553-9415.

BREAKIN' ARTISTS SPOTLIGHT: PINNEY WOODS

Pinney Woods

Mobb, born Travis Moore in Huntsville, Alabama, and relocating to Chattanooga in 1992, honed his smooth vocal skills by singing R&B in the hallways of Howard High.

Ironically, his unlikely partner, Brikk, born Robert Brown, was there at the same time--rapping down those same halls. Though Mobb would later give props to Brikk for his flow, Brikk was far more interested in “getting money” by that time. Fate did not see fit for this remarkable pair to set it off just yet.

Plagued with the demons of substance and child abuse in their respective homes, the two would embark on very separate journeys. While Mobb was in the Marines in Hawaii recording his raps in dorms and handing out tapes on base, Brikk was at home in Chattanooga reppin’ the street life in the drug game.

Upon Mobb’s return home, the two were invited to the same house party where Brikk heard Mobb free styling along with the radio. Amazed by the Mobb’s skills, he and Brikk became roommates and began writing together, but continued to focus on their own solo projects. In fact, Mobb found success writing for other artists such as the hit “Sick and Tired” for Nappy Roots.

Mobb’s ability to write hooks, rap and even sing them makes him a hot commodity while Brikk brings his street cred to his lyrics and solid vocals. The pair is undeniable. Fate had finally decided that it was time.

Realizing that together they were even hotter, they formed their first group called P-Dubb. By chance, Brikk’s cousin, Bone Dry, took them to a local record label called Block Life where they were signed to a deal and shelved. When this venture failed, in 2001 they signed to World Affiliated Records in Atlanta, GA, and were unfortunately shelved a second time. After two years at that label without a release, they left to go it alone and recorded their own album.

With this project in tow, the duo encountered Vincent Brookins of Vinceddie Management, who was A&R for Black Ice Recording/Universal, based in Richmond, CA, while performing at a party at the local Elks Club. Brookins loved it and a new deal was offered. At a time when everyone was attempting to emulate Tupac or Master P, Mobb and Brikk developed their sound from the streets of Pinney Woods. “[It’s about] how we felt, and what we were going through…no disrespect to Pac, but we were just trying to be P-Dubb,” the duo says of their unique sound.

They dropped P-Dubb and adopted their current name from the hood where they got money, Pinney Woods. Now Pinney Woods is willing to do whatever it takes to make good music—be it R&B, Rap, Alternative or even Black Rock; they are determined to make songs that are both hot and relevant to the times.

The duo has performed with Outkast, 8 Ball & MJG, Young Bloodz, and the group New Beginnings featuring Usher, a Chattanooga native, to name a few. Though they shifted their money-making hustle from the streets to the clubs, and went from trappin' on the same street, to sharing the stage, it’s still about the money. As Pinney Woods would say, “In God We Trust, everyone else pay cash.”

BREAKIN' ARTIST SPOTLIGHT: MIKKEY HALSTED

In a congested rap landscape a militant MC with respect for the art of wordplay, musical integrity and a respect for the sacred power of music has emerged from Chicago, hip hop’s latest hot bed for talent. Up steps Mikkey Halsted a product of the Southside of Chicago's notorious Wild 100's section. If the master’s degree in education does not hint at the extraordinary aptitude of this master of ceremony then certainly the first entrĂ©e into the music of Mikkey will leave a listener refreshed with the idea that the revolution just might be closer than previously contemplated.

Not new to the industry, Mikkey got his start with super-producer Kanye West, who produced his first demo that landed him a deal with Cash Money Records. The CMR chapter turned out to be short stint, but a fruitful period musically and professionally as Mikkey went on to feature on 7 Cash Money releases that were certified platinum or gold and performed on several major tours throughout the country. During his tenure with the New Orleans based powerhouse, Mikkey had the opportunity to expose millions of fans to his brand of music he coins as “militant-street-wisdom” and rub shoulders with the industry’s elite including Lil Wayne, R. Kelly, Jay-Z and producer Mannie Fresh, whom Mikkey maintains a strong relationship with to this day.

Throughout Mikkey’s exploits in the industry ranging from his Cash Money days to his 2 year deal with Jermaine Dupri during JD’s brief stint at Virgin Records, Mikkey has earned the respect of some of the biggest names in the industry and a sizeable fan base. Fans and colleagues cite Halsted’s razor sharp lyrics and delivery along with his insightful observations as an indication of his distinctiveness in an industry crowded with impersonators. Acclaimed producer NO ID (Jay-Z, Common, Toni Braxton, G-Unit, Jamie Foxx) had this to say when asked where Mikkey Halsted fits in the evolving story of Chicago and hip-hop, "the perspective of Mikkey Halsted is as crucial a piece to the Chicago hip-hop puzzle as some of the successful artists I help to break including Kanye West and Common" says NO ID. "The Chicago story will never be told in its entirety unless Mikkey gets a chance to speak his peace."

Being a product of a collective that has produced an elite group that reads like a Chi-town who's who, (Kanye West, Common, No I.D., Shawnna, Rhymefest and others) Mikkey Halsted is a recognizable brand with the pedigree of a super star in the making. After his stint of successive short lived record deals, Mikkey Halsted has emerged a more skillful artist with a more militant perspective poised to provoke change in a time of uncertainty that extends beyond the face of hip-hop. There is no question regarding the music industry’s acceptance to Mikkey Halsted only a matter of who will be left standing when the revolution is broadcasted.
